The Beach

Feel the sand between your toes

Smell the salt in the air

Feel the sunshine on your nose

The wind blowing through your hair

Little voices of children playing building sand castles all around

On the beach they will be staying

Playing tic-tac-toe on the ground

When sunscreen is not enough

Ice cubes melting in lemonade

When the day ends the sunburn's rough

Children explore because they're not afraid

Shaking towels and folding chairs

All the goodbyes and lonley stares.

I definitely wrote this poem with summer in mind. Summertime is my favorite time of year. Summer means swimming, going to the beach, hanging out with family and friends, cookouts, vacations, and of course, no school!

The first four lines of my poem describe things that you can only feel in the summertime, like feeling the sand between your toes, smelling the salt in the air, and feeling the sunshine on your nose. To me, when it's summer, I love the feeling it gives you, like you can just be carefree and have fun for a few months out of the year; it's a break from the regular routine of school, work, homework, and waking up early! Summertime is also a time when you can spend with family and friends, and just have a good time being together.

The line "Children explore because they're not afraid" is a line that reminds me of how lucky kids are. They have no worries and can just be carefree and explore. The last two lines of my poem describe not only leaving the beach, but leaving the summer when the time comes and we have to get back into our old routines. We're sad summer is over, but we know it will be back, but for some of us not soon enough!
